Subtitles and Popcorn: 10th Spanish Film Festival

Yesterday, I was feeling cultured so I went over to the 10th Spanish Film Festival at Greenbelt 3 to spend my free day watching subtitled films alone (Sometimes I find joy in seeing movies by myself haha). I caught Fuera de Carta at 4:30pm and La Vergüenza right after. Both were full length and beautifully made!

If you’re in for tearjerker drama, La Vergüenza is the right choice. The film takes place within a single day, gradually revealing how a young couple copes with their adopted 8-year-old boy with behavioral disorders. It’s a moving story about family and love. Director David Planell was supposed to be present at the premiere but he decided not to hop on the plane after hearing typhoon news here in Manila. Haha. La Vergüenza won Best Film and Best Screenplay at the Malaga Spanish Film Festival in 2009.

Fuera de Carta felt like the typical feel-good chick flick, except that it centers around a chef who suddenly finds himself meeting his two children born from his past marriage for convenience. Another unexpected turn happens when an ex-football player moves in to the apartment next to his. Expect a lot of eye candy from this one - from food concocted in the kitchen to football players and breathtaking countrysides. It won Audience Choice Award and Best Actor at the Malaga Spanish Film Festival 2008. It’s got my vote too! It’s screening again on October 15, Saturday, at 2pm if you want to catch it.

So if you feel like taking an hour and a half trip to Spain, go see any of the films with your friends for just 65Php each. {See the schedule here} Just grab a bag of cheese popcorn and iced tea from Chimara and you’re good to go. ¡Que la pase bien! :)
